Kamloops’ Gobiel earns Canada West Player of the Week honours

ABBOTSFORD, BC — A Kamloops athlete helped the University of the Fraser Valley Cascades team earn a split against the top-seeded squad in U SPORTS last weekend, and in doing so, has been named Canada West Player of the Week.

Maddy Gobiel dropped 33 points against the University of Saskatchewan in the first game of a weekend set. She added four rebounds and four steals to help pace her team to an 83-70 win against the Huskies in Friday night.

The next night, Gobiel put up 18 points in a 73-62 loss to the Huskies in the final game of the Canada West regular season. Gobiel finished the season eighth in scoring in Canada West, averaging 18.1 points per game and was fourth in steals, with 2.8 per game.

The UFV Cascades head into the Canada West playoffs this weekend (Feb.17 & 18). They’ll take on the UNBC Timberwolves in the first play-in game of the tournament in Edmonton.
