‘Debris movement’ from slope near Chase the cause of Trans Canada Highway closure: Ministry of Transportation

KAMLOOPS — A near 24-hour closure of the Trans Canada Highway west of Chase was due to debris movement on a slope next to the roadway.

In an email to CFJC Today, B.C.’s Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure says no material from the debris movement landed on the stretch of Highway 1 between Shuswap-Chase Creek Road and Shuswap Avenue, but the province closed the roadway while geotechnical engineers evaluated the scene.

Joni Heinrich, CAO for the Village of Chase said highway workers intervened before any debris made it to the highway.

“They actually stopped everything before that would ever happen,” Heinrich told CFJC News.

“They’re really comfortable that they handled it as well as they could have for safety for not just the travellers but for the homes nearby.”

According to the Mayor of Chase, David Lepsoe, the highway closure had very little effect on the village.

DriveBC first reported of the Trans Canada Highway’s closure shortly before 1:00 p.m. Wednesday (Feb. 8). Highway 1 would not reopen until 10 a.m. Thursday (Feb. 9).
