KAMLOOPS — New proposed federal electoral boundaries would see Kamloops cut into two ridings, with the division splitting the downtown and Sahali.

The Electoral Boundaries Commission unveiled its latest proposal for riding distribution Wednesday (Feb. 8).

Under the new map, B.C. would get one more MP, going from 42 to 43.

The distribution would see the city of Kamloops split into two ridings — Kamloops-Thompson-Nicola and Kamloops-Shuswap-Central Rockies.

Within the urban area, the dividing line between the two ridings would travel north up Highway 5A, east on the Trans Canada Highway and north again on Glenfair Drive and Sixth Avenue. The division would see the Tk’emlups Reserve and North Kamloops in the Kamloops-Thompson-Nicola riding, while Valleyview and east Kamloops would fall within Kamloops-Shuswap-Central Rockies.

Outside Kamloops, the communities of Merritt, Logan Lake, Cache Creek, Barriere and Clearwater would all fall in the Kamloops-Thompson-Nicola riding. The Kamloops-Shuswap-Central Rockies riding extends east to the Alberta border, covering Salmon Arm, Revelstoke and Golden.

The district of 100 Mile House would fall into a new Cariboo-Prince George riding.

MPs will now have until May to register their objections to the proposed changes, which the commission will be required to consider before presenting a revised report.
