City Council asked to support site visit of the selection committee of North American Indigenous Games
KAMLOOPS — Kamloops City Council is being asked to support a ten thousand dollar grant to support the bid committee for the 2027 North American Indigenous Games. The money will be used to host a site visit by the selection committee in April.
The Tk’emlúps te Secwépemc/Kamloops bid is facing competition from Calgary and Saskatoon for the games.
The 2027 North American Indigenous Games have the potential of attracting 6,000 participants to the area. The Games are held every four years and use a geographic rotation when choosing the next location. The next Games will be held in Halifax in 2023. The 2027 bid is limited to the western region. The next opportunity for the western region to host will be in 2039.
Last fall, Council approved a half million dollars in support for the games in the form of facilities, staff time, and a potential cash contribution.
