KAMLOOPS — Friday (Jan. 27) was WolfPack school day – and the TCC was packed with students from schools across the city. They were there to support the TRU men’s volleyball team.

Students were excused from regular classes to experience collegiate sports firsthand. Principal Mike Johnson is glad to see young students being exposed to the sport.

“It’s so neat because all these kids play elementary school volleyball, but when you’re playing elementary school volleyball, you don’t see what it goes to and what it leads to, so to be able to see these athletes hitting as hard as they are, playing absolutely amazing volleyball. It gives these kids something to shoot for in the next few years,” says Johnson.

The students were provided food and beverage from the event’s sponsors. A snack and activity tent was set up for students to grab a bite to eat, create a sign, or pick up a colouring book. Noisemakers were handed out to help the students make some noise for the WolfPack.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the event has not run for the past two seasons. WolfPack school day for many is one of the first times students have been able to go on a field trip to a crowded event.

“I’ve had a smile on my face the whole time just watching this, seeing the big crowds again, seeing the kids get so excited, and so hyped to be in a crowd like this is so good. Because they’ve missed this the last couple of years,” Johnson continues.

Both TRU organizers and the schools agree that exposing students to events like this at a young age will benefit the sport of volleyball in Kamloops. TRU director of Athletics Curtis Atkinson agrees that engaging students is important.

“And we just want to keep the kids engaged, it can be a long night sometimes, long day at some of these events. Keep them excited, get some face paint, and enjoy themselves,” stated Atkinson.

Even though the WolfPack lost the game to the Golden Bears three sets to none, it did not seem to take the energy out of the crowd of enthusiastic students.

Students will be able to attend TRU men’s volleyball games for free through the remainder of the season.
