Tolko announces additional downtime at Soda Creek mill in Williams Lake
VERNON — Tolko says it will take additional downtime at its Soda Creek and Armstrong lumber mills as the lumber industry deals with weakening prices.
“A lack of available economic fibre and weak markets are impacting our operating footprint in the province,” said Troy Connolly, Vice President of Solid Wood. “While our goal is to ensure consistency and stability for all of our operations, the steep decline in lumber demand and upward cost pressures in the province make the decision necessary.”
It says over 350 employees will be impacted by the move. According to its website, Tolko employs 180 people at the Soda Creek operation in Williams Lake. In today’s (Dec.28) news release, Tolko says the situation will be reevaluated at the end of January.
“We have an extremely committed workforce at these locations whose families and communities rely on Tolko. We will continue to support our employees during this challenging time,” said Connolly.
