Prep schools playing outdoor hockey game at Sun Peaks to help families impacted by cancer
SUN PEAKS, B.C. — A pair of prep hockey teams will face off in an outdoor game at Sun Peaks in the new year to raise funds for families affected by cancer.
In a news release, Shawnigan Lake School on Vancouver Island says its U-17 boys’ team will play Coeur d’Alene Hockey Academy from Idaho in the inaugural Canadian Sport School Hockey League (CSSHL) U-17 Prep Winter Classic on Friday, Jan. 6.
The game will be held at Sun Peaks Resort’s open-air NHL-size rink. The game was spearheaded by Carson Usher, a Grade 10 student at Shawnigan Lake, whose father has glioblastoma – a type of cancer that can occur in the brain or spinal cord.
“My dad is really courageous and upbeat even though the odds are stacked against him,” Usher says. “Anyone who has ever met my dad knows that he is happiest when he’s helping others… I look to follow his lead and help make a difference to many families dealing with cancer.”
