Dec 22, 2022 | 5:40 AM

UPDATE (7 a.m.): The Coquihalla Highway between Hope and Merritt reopened at 7 a.m. but drivers are told to expect major delays due to congestion.

Elsewhere, DriveBC reported at around 6:40 a.m. that Highway 3 between Hope and Princeton is closed in both directions.

It’s due to several vehicle incidents near the Copper Creek Recreation Site east of Eastgate.

Crews are on scene, but drivers are told to expect major delays.

EARLIER: KAMLOOPS — The Coquihalla Highway between Hope and Merritt remained closed in both directions overnight Wednesday (Dec. 21).

DriveBC first reported of a vehicle incident between Hope and Shylock Road (Exit 200) at around 4:30 p.m. Wednesday. However, at around 9:45 p.m., DriveBC said the stretch of Highway 5 would remain closed overnight due to vehicle incidents and recoveries.

Additionally, the B.C. Ministry of Transportation announced Wednesday afternoon the Coquihalla Highway between Othello, just east of Hope, and Merritt would be closed due to high arctic outflow winds sweeping through the Coquihalla canyon and blowing away sand used for traction. The province said the highway would remain closed until winds ease and the maintenance contractor can establish traction on the highway surface again.

Detours are available via Highway 1 and Highway 3. An update from DriveBC is due at 7 a.m. Thursday (Dec. 22).
