Coquihalla closed south of Merritt

KAMLOOPS — B.C.’s Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure closed the Coquihalla Highway between Othello, just east of Hope, and Merritt Wednesday (Dec. 21) afternoon.
It blames the closure on strong arctic outflow winds that are sweeping through the Coquihalla canyon. The winds are so strong, they are blowing away sand applied to the highway for traction.
The provincial ministry says the highway will remain closed until the winds ease and the maintenance contractor can again establish traction on the highway surface.
Winds in Hope are expected to continue through Wednesday night according to the latest Environment Canada forecast.
