MERRITT — There’s been another shooting in Merritt. The latest event occurred Monday (Dec. 19) shortly after 5 a.m.

According to an RCMP news release, an officer was investigating a suspicious vehicle parked at the rest area near Hamilton Road. The officer stepped out of his marked police car and began to walk up to the vehicle. That’s when the officer saw the rear passenger window roll down and the barrel of a gun.

Police say one shot was fired at the officer, missing him. The officer fired several rounds in return as the vehicle sped away.

Police are looking for a mid-2000’s dark coloured Jeep Cherokee. It has no running lights and the licence plate was hidden by snow. The vehicle was last seen speeding along Hamilton Hill Road towards the Coquihalla highway.
