KAMLOOPS — A snowfall warning has been issued for the Coquihalla Highway from Hope to Merritt.

In a statement online, Environment Canada says the stretch of Highway 5 could see around 10 to 15 centimetres of snow from Monday (Dec. 19) until Tuesday afternoon. A similar snowfall warning is also in effect for Highway 3 from Hope to Princeton via Allison Pass for the same time.

It’s due to a low-pressure system that will land in Washington State tonight and brush through southern B.C.

The latest snowfall warning for the Coquihalla Highway between Hope and Merritt comes after it reopened following lengthy, chilly closures Sunday (Dec. 18) afternoon.

DriveBC first reported of a vehicle incident on Highway 5 at Comstock Road south of Merritt at 1:20 p.m. Sunday. While the initial incident closed northbound lanes on the stretch of Highway 5, DriveBC reported at around 2:30 p.m. that another incident had closed the southbound lanes.

DriveBC announced the southbound lanes were clear at around 6:20 p.m., while northbound travellers had to wait an extra three hours until around 9:40 p.m.

A winter storm warning for the Coquihalla Highway between Hope and Merritt was issued by Environment Canada on Saturday (Dec. 17), predicting nearly 20 centimetres of snow before Sunday afternoon.

Residents are asked to adjust their driving with the changing road conditions. Environment Canada says weather in the mountains can change suddenly resulting in hazardous driving conditions.

Further north, an extreme cold warning remains in effect for Highway 97 from Clinton to 100 Mile House until Wednesday (Dec. 21) morning.
