First responders care for 20 patients, send five to hospital following Coquihalla crash

MERRITT, B.C. — BC Emergency Health Services (EHS) say it cared for 20 patients following a vehicle incident that closed the northbound lanes of the Coquihalla Highway between Hope and Merritt for nearly eight hours.

EHS told CFJC Today that seven ambulances and two supervisor units were sent to the Comstock Road area at 1:06 p.m. Sunday (Dec. 18). Of the 20 patients that were cared for, five were sent to hospital: two in critical condition and three in moderate condition.

Elsewhere, EHS say one patient was sent to hospital in stable condition following a vehicle incident on the Coquihalla Highway near Coldwater at around 1:50 p.m. Sunday..

DriveBC first reported the incident near Comstock Road at 1:20 p.m. While the initial incident closed northbound lanes on the stretch of Highway 5, DriveBC reported around 2:30 p.m. that the incident near Coldwater closed the southbound lanes.
