COLLINS: Enough about the non-Royals Please!

I HAVE A BIG Christmas wish. I don’t know if Santa can fulfil it or not. My one wish this Christmas is that I never have to see another six hours of drivel about Meghan and Harry. The Netflix documentary that concluded the other night was a wasted six hours of my life. It was time I could have spent watching a real documentary put together by real journalists talking about real issues. I would have been better watching a sappy Christmas show.

I have always been a Royal watcher. My mom had some souvenir glossy-finished books when Elizabeth became Queen. Meeting the Queen and Prince Philip when they visited Terrace in the 1950’s made me a fan. And with my English father-in-law and Welsh wife, how could I not follow along? But Meghan and Harry have made Royal-watching a farce. If we want to watch Royalty, let’s watch the King and Queen-consort. Or the heir to the Throne and his wife.

Meghan and Harry have mastered the arts of pouting and martyrdom to the extreme. They’ve been spurned, they’ve been humiliated, and just decided they had to pack their bags and go. But not quietly by any stretch. If their desire was simply to quietly leave, they could have done that. But no, there was a huge fanfare. They could have simply stayed in England. Plenty of secure Royal spaces they could have gone and still done their charity work away from the Royal Family. But they decided, for whatever reason, to visit the Colonies, coming first to Canada, where they didn’t feel at home, then to California. They were upset that they didn’t get security services from back home and the list goes on. They pouted with Opera on an “exclusive “ interview, now there’s a six-part series on Netflix which expanded on the earlier drivel. Not much startling in those six hours. Not much said about the relationship between Harry and his brother, or Harry and his father. Plenty about Diana.

As Christmas approaches, I hope I am on Santa’s nice list and can be spared any more of that kind of drama. I can’t deny there may not be some grains of truth in those six hours, but, as the cliche goes, you make your own bed, you have to lay in it. If the Royal standards and protocols aren’t comfortable for Meghan, that’s life. Go live the comfy life in L.A., but don’t blame everyone else. It’s like the Sussexes want the best of both worlds. That’s not likely to happen here. You made the choice. Now live with it.
