KAMLOOPS — The Salvation Army’s ‘Adopt a Family’ campaign is in full swing ahead of the holiday season. Families in need registered for a Christmas hamper provided by other families in Kamloops or community organizations like churches or businesses.

Capt. Kelly Fifield confirmed that this season, their numbers are up for families in need of support, with the campaign supporting 400 kids this Christmas. The ‘Adopt a Family’ campaign helps provide both gifts and dinner for those struggling.

“What we want to do is make sure that kids have gifts to open on Christmas morning. Every child we look for a main gift and then a secondary gift, something small to go under the tree,” said Fifield. “And then we also provide food for Christmas dinner. We have some sponsors who drop off dried goods and we have others who drop off gift cards so families can go and purchase what it is that they eat for Christmas dinner.”

The Christmas hampers will go out on Thursday (Dec. 15), with last minute donations still accepted. With inflation rising and many families feeling the financial pinch, the support for the program has remained high.

“It has been a really tough year for everybody. Just the cost of groceries and the cost of toys has just really gone up. And so we were struggling to get sponsors, but we put out a call and people just spread the word. And we were able to get everybody matched up. We have 187 families who we have matched up with sponsors. We are really excited that we were able to do that and get that all done,” said Fifield.
