Blazers split games on Vancouver Island, fall to Royals 5-2

Dec 8, 2022 | 8:44 AM

KAMLOOPS — The Kamloops Blazers leave Vancouver Island with two out of a possible four points, but also with a bitter taste to end their two-game series in Victoria against the Royals.

After shutting out the Royals 3-0 the night prior, the Blazers fell 5-2 on Wednesday (Dec. 7) while being outshot 38-27.

The Blazers opened the scoring on the power play late in the first period thanks to a wrist shot from Caedan Bankier on the far side circle.

However, the Royals answered back with three goals in 2:23 to start the second period, chasing Blazers goalie Michael Schnattinger.

The Blazers did respond with another power play goal in the second period – Fraser Minten from between the hashmarks – but the Royals scored two more goals en route to the 5-2 win.

The Blazers fall to 14-6-3-2 on the 2022-23 Western Hockey League season, good for 33 points in 25 games. They’re first in the B.C. Division and third in the Western Conference.

The Blazers are back home Friday (Dec. 9) to take on the Vancouver Giants. Puck drop is at 7:00 p.m. from Sandman Centre.
