LOGAN LAKE, B.C. — Teck’s Highland Valley Copper mine near Logan Lake is temporarily shutting down its Valley Pit due to geotechnical instability.
In a news release issued Monday (Dec. 5), a Teck spokesperson says the shutdown is a proactive measure and there is no risk to worker safety. There are no risks to the environment or nearby communities, according to the release.
The company expects to reopen the Valley Pit once remediation work is finished. In the meantime, employees and contractors who were set to work in that area will be redeployed elsewhere.
Teck adds Highland Valley will use stockpiled ore at the site to continue its operations as normal.
