WolfPack basketball looks for strong finish to first half of season

KAMLOOPS — For the WolfPack men’s and women’s basketball teams, the 2022 portion of the 22/23 season has not been kind.

So far, the men’s squad has one win in six tries this year, while the women are winless in six games. However, with the MacEwen Griffins coming to town for a weekend set, the ‘Pack could be set for some success.

“I want to get a win,” fifth-year guard Megan Rouault says. “I think we all really want to get a win. We played them in the preseason and we know we can compete with them. It’s just a matter of stopping their best players. I think if we play well we can compete with anyone.”

The ‘Pack continues to learn and grow under new head coach Todd Warnick. So far, the closest result for the TRU women has been a 57-50 loss at home to UBCO Heat, a game in which the WolfPack held its opponents in check, defensively. The Griffins women’s team is 1-7 so far this year, so the ‘Pack sees an opportunity for a positive result.

“We know we’re not going to win 80-79,” Rouault explains. “If we’re going to beat a team, it’s probably going to be around 60, 50 range, so we have to defend to even compete with these teams. It’s the most important thing for us, for sure.”

On the men’s side, the Griffins haven’t won this year, and are in the midst of a 41-game losing streak. For the 1-5 WolfPack, it’s a big opportunity to go into the break with some momentum.

“MacEwen is a team similar to us; we’re both near the bottom of the standings,” Simon Crossfield, WolfPack third-year forward tells CFJC Sports. “We know they’re going to come out hungry. They don’t have a win yet this year, and we know how that felt.”

There’s no doubt the Griffins will compete hard this weekend. They’re in the midst of a 41-game losing streak and are coming off a tough loss to the University of Manitoba Bisons, last weekend. The WolfPack know they’ll have to pay close attention to details if they hope to earn a weekend sweep.

“We know we have to play our best basketball and we have to prepare well,” Crossfiled says. “If we go out there and do what we do, we play our best game, I think we have a pretty got shot at getting two wins.”

The women’s games start at 5:30 pm while the men’s games get underway at 7:30 pm on both Friday and Saturday at the TCC. If you bring a non-perishable food item, you can get into all the games for free this weekend. All donations go to the TRU Student Union Food Bank.
