SOUND OFF: Buy local this holiday season

Dec 1, 2022 | 11:27 AM

BC BUY LOCAL WEEK runs until December 4th, celebrating the unique contributions that B.C. businesses make to our economy. They are local job creators that employ our friends, family members and neighbours. They utilize the services of other local businesses, keeping money circulating in our communities. They add vibrancy to our towns and cities, and often sponsor local events and charities that do great work in our neighbourhoods.

With all this in mind, I ask you to consider buying local as much as you can this holiday season. Small businesses have had a tough go of it the past couple of years due to the pandemic, and their recovery efforts continue. The same goes for farmers and ranchers hit hard by climate events including fires, floods and mudslides. I know they would appreciate your support as you purchase goods to prepare your holiday meals.

As you seek out the perfect Christmas gifts for loved ones, it’s worth noting that local shops also carry a number of unique items that you may not be able to find in the big box stores. Our local crafters and artisans are exceptionally talented, and their one-of-a-kind creations will mean a lot to the people you care about.

Many of these makers will be featured at the many holiday craft fairs taking place throughout my riding of Cariboo-Chilcotin. In Williams Lake in December, you can check out the Station House Gallery Christmas Market (until December 24); the Willow Grove B&B Christmas Markets (December 1-23); the Christmas Bazaar at the Stampede Grounds’ longhouse (December 2); the Christmas Craft Fair at Miocene Community Centre (December 3); the Likely Elementary Christmas Craft Fair (December 3); and the Elders Christmas Bazaar at the Elizabeth Grouse Gymnasium in Sugar Cane (December 3).

In 100 Mile House, you can take in the Parkside Art Gallery Christmas Bazaar (until December 24); and the Christmas Craft Fair at the 100 Mile Community Hall (December 2-3). The Crafter’s Market, our indoor farmers’ market open year-round at #4-205 Birch Avenue, is also a great place to explore.

While many locals will enjoy perusing the hand-crafted and high-quality offerings at these events, we certainly welcome visitors from throughout the region to attend as well. The Cariboo-Chilcotin is a truly special place, and I know you will find lots of unique Christmas gift ideas — for others, or for yourself!

On that note, let’s extend that joy of giving to those in our community who may need some extra support this time of year. We’ve heard plenty of news stories about increasing demand at our food banks and social service agencies this year, as many people are struggling with the high cost of living. These community organizations are finding it difficult to keep up with that demand, so please consider offering your time, energy or a financial donation to help them continue to carry out their great work.

I wish everyone a Merry Christmas and a relaxing holiday season, making new memories and cherishing old traditions with the ones you love.
