“Every new coach comes with different philosophies,” Rouault says. “Todd’s super great because he wants to see everyone’s strengths shine, and he’s given everyone a chance. You see every player out there, and he’s really trying to get the best out of everyone. It’s awesome.”

Warnick faces several challenges stepping into the role of head coach, with a stable of players he’s inherited. The biggest one might be figuring out where those players fit into his coaching style.

“Everyone’s shown something positive at different times, everyone’s shown areas they’re challenged in at different times,” Warnick says. “I think we’re still navigating COVID on the development of student-athletes, at this time. I don’t think we can truly make that assessment until at least mid-season, and maybe even the end of the year.”

As the lone fifth-year on the WolfPack roster, Rouault is the defacto leader of the squad. During her time with the program, she’s played with many talented athletes. In her final year on the hardwood, she’s using lessons learned from a pair of those players to help Warnick build a culture for this team.

“The two biggest leaders that I think about and try to mold into my leadership styler are Shenise Sigsworth and Leilani Carney,” Rouault explains. “They were good leaders without having to be vocal. They did those little things, and having players like that is just so important on a basketball team.”

The team continues to focus on building that culture and improving every day at practice. Warnick, who led the NAIT Ooks to a CCAA National Championship last year, knows that creating a winning culture takes time.

“Creating culture takes time,” Warnick says. “That time is basically about creating consistency of behaviour. It’s less about the outcome and more about how we do things, versus what the outcome is.”
