‘Revitalize, re-energize and rebrand’; B.C. Liberal name change step one for Falcon

KAMLOOPS — Last week, the B.C. Liberal membership voted overwhelmingly in support of changing the name of the party with 80 per cent of the party’s membership in agreement. The name, B.C. United, was the favourite option of more than 2,000 suggestions. The switch was a campaign promise of new party leader Kevin Falcon.

When the new name will come into effect is still unclear as the party needs to undergo a branding exercise. They are also concerned about when an election may be triggered by the NDP government.

As for the name sounding like a soccer team, Falcon is onside.

“I’ll tell you why B.C United is such an important name to me. One, because it sounds like a soccer club, and my girls play soccer. I love that. But two, I think it’s important that I want this province to be united. Now, we aren’t always going to agree on everything, but I want to make sure we have a big tent that people will feel really welcome coming into. If they believe that a private sector-driven economy is the best way to generate tax revenue for government, that we can invest in a public healthcare system that really work and gets results, not like what we have now, can back up our police that are doing unbelievable work to make sure we have safe communities and ensure that we have an education system that works for our kids — that’s why we are united and that is why it’s B.C. United,” said Falcon.

Falcon called the name change just one step toward revitalizing the B.C. Liberals in British Columbia. He believes that the new look team will be more inclusive and better represent the province.

“This is only one part of what I committed to do which is revitalize, re-energize and rebrand, if approved by the members, this party. We are going to make sure our party is going to reflect the communities that we hope to represent. I want a more diverse party, I want more women in this party, I want to make sure the LGBTQ community feels really welcome in this party,” said Falcon.
