LOGAN LAKE, B.C. — UPDATE (2:55 p.m.): CFJC Today received this statement from Teck Highland Valley Copper:

The health and safety of workers is our first priority, and all safety concerns are thoroughly reviewed and addressed.

In addition, the team at Highland Valley Copper is working with employees to ensure strong safety performance.

HVC’s leadership team are working to engage with the union to work towards a safe resumption of regular operations.

EARLIER: CFJC Today has learned of a safety shutdown at Teck Highland Valley Copper Wednesday (Nov. 16).

According to multiple sources, members of the United Steelworkers 7619 are refusing work at the huge mine near Logan Lake after a safety scare earlier this week.

The extent of the job action is not clear.

Photos posted online, apparently taken at the mine Monday (Nov. 14), show a huge mining shovel, that has fallen off its stands. The shovel, a Bucyrus 495, weighs hundreds of thousands of kilograms.

A source tells CFJC Today, the stanchions that were supporting the shovel housing were being used by a contractor during a maintenance procedure when they collapsed.

It’s not believed anyone was hurt in the incident.

CFJC Today has sent requests for comment to both the United Steelworkers 7619 and Highland Valley Copper.
