MERRITT, B.C. — Merritt Mounties are looking to connect the dots of an early morning shooting in the community. Local members along with assistance from an emergency response team are combing the community of Merritt as well as the Coldwater band and Lower Nicola areas as they hunt for suspects and evidence.

“From 5:00 a.m. to 6:30 a.m. [Tuesday] morning (Nov. 15) we had reports of multiple shootings that occurred in the city of Merritt, Coldwater and out at Mamette Lake Road. Our members responded as quick as they could, they were no longer in process when we arrived, which is a good thing. We haven’t had any shootings since. we believe that the shootings are targeted and there is no further risk to the public,” stated Acting Merritt RCMP Detachment Commander Sgt. Josh Roda.

The shooting is believed to have taken place in three areas of the community including the Diamond Vale area of Merritt where local RCMP have marked off a crime scene within the Diamond Vale Trailer Park.

Merritt Mayor Mike Goetz confirmed that, amazingly, no one was hurt.

“Approximately 100 rounds were fired. No threat to the public, it appears to be targeted,” said Goetz. “There is a large police presence in town. Nobody was injured, nobody was hit. That is about where it stands right now.”

The investigation for the RCMP is in its infancy according to Sgt. Roda, who did state that they have identified multiple suspects.

“The investigation is in its infancy. The next steps are just following the evidence, continue processing the scenes. We have some suspects identified and we are working towards getting this file further along so hopefully one day it can see the light of a courtroom,” added Roda.

A heavy police presence remained throughout the community all day as officers searched for the suspects.
