Kamloops RCMP offer winter driving advice, including being better prepared with proper tires

KAMLOOPS — Now that the first major snowfall of the year is a week past, Kamloops RCMP want to give drivers a trio of important tips to remember as they traverse the roads.

First, RCMP say it’s important to have the right tires on your vehicle.

“Most people have mud and snow or snowflake tires, which is legal, but not necessarily ideal,” said Cpl. Wayne Chung of the detachment’s Municipal Traffic Unit in a news release. “Dedicated winter tires are always the best choice, but making sure those tires are in good condition is also important.”

Chung notes the snowfall last weekend led to a series of collisions and road closures.

He says commercial drivers should also remember to anticipate their routes ahead of time and apply chains before attempting to scale hills when the road conditions are snowy and slippery.

Second, Chung says drivers should ensure they are driving to conditions — even if that means driving well below the posted speed limit.

Thirdly, Chung advises potential drivers to objectively assess their own comfort levels on slippery roads and choose not to drive if they are uncomfortable.

“…[P]eople need to be honest with themselves. If you’re not comfortable driving, maybe stay home or at your workplace for the duration of the poor weather conditions, then head home once the roadways have been plowed,” he said.
