WolfPack men’s squad heading to national championship following Friday night thriller

KAMLOOPS — As the USports Men’s Soccer National Championship is being held at Hillside Stadium in Kamloops, the home team is heading to the final.

In a thrilling shootout win, the Thompson Rivers University (TRU) WolfPack will play in the national championship Sunday (November 13).

Defeating the top-ranked Cape Breton Capers who entered Friday’s game undefeated, the WolfPack advance to the final for the first time in program history.

“It just means everything, everyone has been so behind us at the university – Matt Milovick, Curtis Atkinson – and the entire athletic department,” said WolfPack head coach John Antulov.

“Everyone has been unbelievable and the community came out to support in a big way.”

Neither squad was able to grab the lead in the opening half despite TRU outshooting CBU 12-6 at the half.

The WolfPack’s Marco Favaro snagged the lead in the 51st minute when he put one away in the back of the net.

With time running down and the ‘Pack leading by a goal, the Capers responded in the 85th minute as Cian Lynch scored from a penalty shot to tie up the game at 2-2.

Extra time didn’t decide a winner so the two teams headed into a penalty kick shootout.

For the second-straight night, the WolfPack emerged as victors from the shootout, handing the Capers the loss.

It’s unknown territory for the ‘Pack as the team takes on the UBC Thunderbirds Sunday. The match starts at 2:00 p.m. at Hillside Stadium.
