WestJet outage more significant for Kamloops air passengers than winter storm

KAMLOOPS — Kamloops air travellers experienced a series of delays and complications over the weekend — and not all due to the weather.

Kamloops Airport Managing Director Ed Ratuski says a major reservation system outage caused WestJet to scrub all flights in and out of Kamloops Sunday (Nov. 6).

“WestJet didn’t operate any flights yesterday. The first two were related to the recovery from the reservation system issue and the last one due to weather,” Ratuski told CFJC Today. “It’s been a significant impact for passengers in and out of Kamloops over the weekend.”

The airline expects to continue working through the backlog throughout the day.

Ratuski notes the winter storm that blew into the B.C. Interior Sunday evening, while leading to major problems on the roads into Monday, only affected the airport for a few hours.

“Just after 9:30 last night, the weather and the freezing conditions caught up with us. There was a flight from Vancouver and one from Calgary that were impacted — they didn’t arrive last night,” said Ratuski. “Everything was back to normal by about 4:00 this morning and the flights that were here to depart this morning departed on time.”

Residents planning to travel by air are advised to keep in contact with their airlines in case of cancellations and delays Monday.

“Right now, the runway conditions are actually excellent. It will be wind and visibility, primarily, going forward from this point,” said Ratuski.
