Stuart Wood winter shelter to open Monday night

KAMLOOPS — The City of Kamloops says a winter shelter at the former Stuart Wood Elementary School will open Monday night (Nov. 7).

In a news release, Community and Protective Services Director Byron McCorkell says the development is thanks to “the incredible efforts of B.C. Housing and Out of the Cold,” who will operate the shelter.

The Stuart Wood shelter will open from 8:00 p.m. to 8:00 a.m., seven days a week. The city says it will stay open overnight every day until March 31, 2023.

The announcement, made late in the day Monday, will open additional capacity for those who need to escape the cold, blustery weather for the night.

ASK Wellness announced last week it will open overnight warming centres at Crossroads Inn on Seymour Street and Spero House on Tranquille Road. Interior Community Services will open its downtown youth outreach centre to clients aged 25 and younger during daytime hours until 8:00 p.m. this week.

The Loop opened to nearly 50 people Sunday night.

“The City would like to thank Out of the Cold and BC Housing for their dedication to getting this shelter up and running so quickly,” said McCorkell in the release. “It’s important for the safety of staff and shelter guests that staff have the appropriate training and resources to meet the needs of the people staying at the shelter, and that doesn’t happen overnight.”

Stuart Wood was one of two winter shelters scheduled to open November 1, along with the Yacht Club. Just days before the planned opening, the Canadian Mental Health Association announced it was backing out of its agreement to operate the shelters.
