COLLINS: No proper winter tires? Get the hell off the road!

Nov 6, 2022 | 7:00 AM

NOTHING IS MORE FRUSTRATING than the first snowfall of the season. Except for the number of idiots who don’t have proper snow tires on.

The first snowfall is always tricky. First covering on the dry pavement. First run for the snow-clearing equipment. And our first adjustment to driving on slippery roads.

All made worse by drivers who think it’s okay to wait until that snow hits and then make a mad dash to get their winters on. If I had my way, those drivers should be fined for endangering others. And maybe they should have some big penalties attached to their insurance.

Yes, I know it’s over the top. But it’s so darn frustrating.

If we can demand proper winter tires within certain dates on the mountain passes, why shouldn’t the same apply in the city. Do you think it’s any less dangerous driving around the hills of Kamloops?

Thursday was typical of what happens when drivers aren’t prepared. Sorry for ranting, but when the City has to tell people without winter tires to stay off the streets, it just points out how ignorant people are about the problem.

Hey, a rare snowstorm in early October is understandable but we’re into snow season now, and we had plenty of warning we could get snow.

There is no excuse for that kind of behaviour and it’s unfair for those of us who are prepared, to pay higher insurance fees for those who aren’t.

I’m Doug Collins and that’s One Man’s Opinion.
