Snow creates chaos on highways in Kamloops region

Nov 3, 2022 | 7:44 PM

UPDATE (7:50 a.m.): Drive BC says Highway 5A is open in both directions but drivers should expect delays.

UPDATE (6:40 a.m.): DriveBC says Highway 5A south of Kamloops remains closed in both directions with no detour available.

Another update is due at 8:30 a.m.

UPDATE (5:40 a.m.): As of Friday (Nov. 4) morning, all but one of the major closures affecting highway traffic in the Kamloops region have been cleared.

DriveBC reported by the end of Thursday night that the Coquihalla Highway from Hope to Merritt, the Trans Canada Highway at Juniper Beach Provincial Park east of Cache Creek, and Highway 97 between Cache Creek and Clinton were reopened following vehicle incidents amid the snowy conditions.

However, Highway 5A nearly seven to 10 kilometres south of Kamloops – between Campbell Creek Road and Separation Road – remains closed in both directions due to a multi-vehicle incident. DriveBC says another update is due at 6 a.m.

Within the City of Kamloops, three roads were closed due to snowy conditions: Springhill Drive, Hugh Allan Drive from Pacific Way to Howe Road, and Summit Drive from Whiteshield Crescent to Tremerton Drive. Shortly after 8 p.m. Thursday, the City said on social media that Springhill Drive was cleared from motor vehicle incidents, but didn’t provide updates on Hugh Allan Drive and Summit Drive.

“Our crews are out in full force to get the roads plowed and sanded, but until we can get ahead of the snow, the best thing to do is stay home,” the City states in an alert. “If you absolutely must drive, slow down and use extreme caution.”

EARLIER: KAMLOOPS – Thick wet snow has led to a rash of crashes along roads in and outside of Kamloops tonight (Nov. 3).

Emergency crews are on the scene of a crash along Summit Drive in Kamloops. The slick road conditions led Kamloops Fire Rescue crews to attach chains to their tires to provide them with better traction through the snow.

West of the city, the Trans Canada Highway has been closed near Juniper Beach Provincial Park. According to DriveBC, the road has been closed by a vehicle incident.

The Coquihalla Highway has been closed to northbound traffic between Hope and Merritt due to a vehicle incident. DriveBC says drivers should expect major delays.

Highway 97 north of Cache Creek was closed early this evening but has since been opened to single lane alternating traffic. DriveBC says a vehicle incident between Cache Creek and Clinton led to the initial closure.

Environment Canada issued highway alerts for highways in the Kamloops region earlier today, including the Coquihalla from Merritt to Hope, the Okanagan Connector from Merritt to Kelowna, Highway 97 from Clinton to 100 Mile House, and the Trans Canada from Eagles Pass to Rogers Pass.
