COLLINS: Hollow promises from the West to Ukraine

Nov 3, 2022 | 4:30 AM

“WE’RE WITH YOU TO THE END.”

Those were the types of promises made to Ukraine as Russian forces attacked and killed thousands, including many civilians back in February. Since then, western nations have poured billions of dollars into aid, both civilian and military. Then, Ukrainian forces mounted a surprising counterattack and retook some of their lost territory, thanks in part to that aid from the West.

The Russians used missiles and drones to attack targets in Ukraine. Ukraine asked for more help. We gave it to them.

But the West, fearful of the Russian threats of nuclear weapons, has allowed the battle to deteriorate into what promises to be a long, drawn-out conflict.

There are many problems that must be dealt with, including the economy, inflation, and so much else. What was once a rallying cry to support Ukraine has now been reduced in scope and replaced with a cry of “how am I going to put food on the table? “

Many countries have been wondering how much more they can give. President Joe Biden has gone so far as to chastise Ukrainian leadership for not showing enough gratitude for U.S. aid.

The President may be fighting for his political life, but Ukrainians are fighting for their actual lives. Quite a different battle.

We have a lot of nations that talk big but don’t act big. We only make promises when they suit our purposes and forget about them quickly when they don’t.

I fear- “we’re with you til the end” could wind up being nothing more than a hollow promise.
