SOUND OFF: Kamloops expands use of the Voyent Alert! system to prepare for flooding

Nov 2, 2022 | 4:17 PM

TWENTY-THOUSAND PEOPLE IN KAMLOOPS have signed up for the Voyent Alert! System, which has been used three times in the past year to alert citizens about water main breaks. The city council has now said that they are hoping to use Voyent 2.0 more to notify residents of emergencies, planned service cuts and flooding. Flooding has become far more of a problem during recent years, especially due to extreme weather. The Voyent system could really benefit the residents of Kamloops so that they can protect their properties and livelihoods in advance of any emergency events.

Flash flooding

Thunderstorms and torrential rain in August brought flash flooding to the Batchelor Heights area of Kamloops within 25 minutes. For many residents, including those on North River Drive, this brought deep water into basements, garages and the first floors of properties. Dealing with water damage generally requires specialized pump equipment. Drying out rooms using humidifiers, heaters and air movers can also take time, which is why it is essential to be prepared. Preventing future flooding is going to be a long road, but with alerts of thunderstorms and extreme weather situations, residents of Kamloops can be better equipped to deal with sudden events that could potentially damage their homes and businesses.

Seasonal flood risks

Flooding, particularly during snowmelt season, has been a risk to Kamloops residents for many years. The snowpack information along with local weather predictions has helped the city government prepare for high river levels and flood risks. This year the snow basin index was 42 per cent higher than the annual average — the highest it has been since 2014. The peak of snowmelt season is normally at the start of June in North Thompson toward the end of the month in South Thompson. June is also historically the rainiest month of the year in Kamloops, and this brings with it seasonal flood risks. This year high waters reached almost the same levels they did in 1972 when floods devastated the city. Climate change is also driving up the risk of flooding and this is increasing the chances of an extreme event during snowmelt season.

Emergency alert system

Having a localized emergency alert system is essential for residents of Kamloops when there is an increased chance of flooding in the city. Residents can sign up for the Voyent Alert! system anonymously — they don’t have to give personal details or information and can unsubscribe at any time. Once registered, emergency alerts are available via text, email or phone call, and the service is completely free. There is also a Voyent app which is available on the Google Play or Apple stores. Alerts will only be relevant to the City of Kamloops and no other areas of BC.

Flooding in Kamloops has become a regular problem, especially during snowmelt season when the river levels are higher. Using the Voyent Alert! system, residents can keep informed of any emergencies and make preparations when necessary.
