‘There is no peace when she is not here’: One year later, Shannon White’s friends and family search for answers

KAMLOOPS — “It’s like a piece of you is just not there and it makes it really hard because you have to find who you are again.”

Shannon White has been missing for one year. Shannon’s friend Angela Hulsman now looks after her dog, Buddy, as together they search for answers.

“Without those answers, without that closure, you can’t move on. You can’t grieve, you can’t properly process your emotions because there aren’t those answers. It’s not like when somebody is sick or somebody tragically dies. There are missing pieces to the puzzle,” said Hulsman.

White’s father, Gerald, has come to Kamloops multiple times over the past year to aid in searches for his daughter. He’ll be back in town Tuesday evening (Nov. 1) for the memorial event.

The outpouring of support from the community has been overwhelming for those closest to White.

“We are just going to light up Kamloops. We have a route planned and we are going to go through town. Just remind everybody that her light is still bright and shining and we are never going to let that light go out,” added Hulsman.

White’s missing person file remains an open investigation within the Kamloops RCMP, who still have members working the file.

“It’s hasn’t been forgotten. It remains a priority. There are a number of officers working on this ongoing investigation. There is a lot of evidence that has been looked at, and that continues to be reviewed. We continue that appeal to the public. If they have anything now is the time to reach out, it’s not too late,” said Cpl. Crystal Evelyn.

Tuesday evening, when White’s friends come together in Kamloops, they’ll try to remember the good times, and thanks to her personality it shouldn’t be too difficult.

“She is just such a special person that everybody’s relationship with her is so unique in their own way that is kind of hard to describe because we all have that special bond,” said Hulsman. “There is not a single person that she did meet or have a relationship with that doesn’t miss her greatly.”

Today’s somber anniversary marks one year since White was last seen — 365 days of unanswered questions, 12 months of hope for closure.

“She just needs to come home. We need answers, we need to know what happened. One way or another we need to be at peace and her family and friends can’t be at peace. There is no peace when she is not here,” said Hulsman.
