KAMLOOPS — Kamloops just wrapped up the warmest month of October on record.

Environment Canada meteorologist Alyssa Charbonneau says the city recorded a mean temperature of 11.9 degrees Celsius last month – about three-and-a-half degrees warmer than average.

“In October, most of British Columbia was warmer than normal. Many locations set their warmest October on record and Kamloops is one of those,” Charbonneau told CFJC Today. “It came as the warmest October on record with records going back to 1890.”

Charbonneau also noted there was only 1.5 millimetres of precipitation, making it the fourth-driest October on records dating back 132 years.

“It was also a dry month along with a hot month. The summer-like conditions just continued right into the month of October and that brought, of course, the risk of wildfires and impacts from wildfire smoke — which is not something we normally experience in October,” she said.

Conditions are looking much more seasonally typical in the near future, with single-digit high temperatures, overnight lows below freezing and plenty of showers and moisture.

“We’ve seen that switch at the end of October bringing some showers in,” said Charbonneau. We’ve got some more in the forecast and we are looking at a bit of a big shift in the weather as we get into this weekend with temperatures falling below freezing and staying that way.”
