Mounties not responsible for injury sustained in Pacific Way mental health call: police watchdog
KAMLOOPS — B.C.’s police watchdog has concluded RCMP officers were not responsible for serious injuries suffered by the subject of a mental health check last week.
RCMP were called to the Pacific Way area of Aberdeen last Monday afternoon (Oct. 24), responding to the report of a distraught male who may have been in possession of a weapon.
The Independent Investigations Office of B.C. (IIO) says negotiators spoke to the man for several hours, and he was taken into custody at about 8:35 p.m. after officers used ‘less-lethal force options’ to subdue him.
The IIO noted the man sustained a serious, self-inflicted injury shortly before being taken into custody. He was taken to hospital for treatment.
