COLLINS: Sometimes, I am wrong

I AM VIRTUALLY NEVER WRONG. My wife of 51-plus years, and certainly my sister and kids, have a long list countering that, and to them, I say “fake news”. I was never wrong in my long career at work, and any documents indicating otherwise, were shredded when I left office.

Seriously, I have no problem admitting the truth. I was wrong about the changes in traffic flow from downtown over the Overlanders Bridge to the North Shore.

When the City proposed the idea of closing off the right hand traffic lane on West Victoria Street to allow continuous traffic flow onto the bridge from the Summit Connector, I thought it would create problems for traffic to go from two lanes to one on West Victoria. But, it has worked so well the City is going to make it permanent.

My bad.

The traffic flow in that area has always been a problem. When I first came here in 1970, there was no Summit Connector. What traffic there was came mostly from Mission Flats,, and down the old Hudson Bay Trail.

Even when the Connector was built, it was part of a concept that would have seen a second crossing to the North Shore, winding up near Singh Street in Brocklehurst. The road down the hill was only supposed to be a cutoff lane because most of the traffic was supposed to go over the new bridge. The bridge project was scrapped, thus the sharp curve halfway up the Connector.

The Connector became busier, and the old periodic green light used to allow traffic flow was no longer adequate. There were often lineups halfway up the Connector. Now that the traffic flow onto the Bridge is continuous, those lineups should decrease substantially.

Okay, I admit it. I was wrong. Hold that – not wrong, just an error in judgment. Sounds much better.
