KFR reminding Kamloops residents about Halloween firework ban

KAMLOOPS — Ahead of Halloween festivities this weekend and treat-or-tricking on Monday night, Kamloops Fire Rescue is reminding residents that fireworks are not allowed, and anyone who decides to discharge fireworks will face a fine.

KFR says with the bone dry conditions, with very little precipitation in the Kamloops area, fireworks pose a major fire risk.

“We’ve cancelled fireworks for this year, for Halloween. It’s just a safety precaution. It’s just so dry out here. Right now, even with the wind, you can see if we had any type of a grass fire, it would easily get out of control. [That’s why] we suspended fireworks for this season,” said KFR chief fire prevention officer Dean Olstad.

People who decide to go ahead and set off fireworks over the next few days will face a $250 fine if caught by Kamloops Fire Rescue.

“The sale and discharge of fireworks is a fire prevention bylaw,” noted Olstad. “That’s where the fines come from, so if people are discharging fireworks in the city, we can issue violations for that.”

Olstad is also reminding Kamloops residents KFR has suspending burning within the city for the short term.
