Vehicle incident impacts traffic on Highway 5 north of Barriere

UPDATE (12:30 p.m.): Highway 5 remains single lane alternating.

Elsewhere, BC Emergency Health Services told CFJC Today no ambulance units were sent to the scene. Additionally, the BC Coroners Services says they’re not investigating any deaths from the incident.

UPDATE (8 a.m.): DriveBC says Highway 5 north of Barriere is now open to single lane alternating traffic, and drivers should expect minor delays.

Another update is due for noon.

Meanwhile, BC Hydro confirms the power outage affecting 360 customers in the same area is due to a motor vehicle accident. Crews are on site and power is expected to be restored at noon.

EARLIER: BARRIERE, B.C. — A vehicle incident has a stretch of Highway 5 north of Barriere closed in both directions.

DriveBC reported at 5:15 a.m. Thursday (Oct. 27) that Highway 5 between Mitchell Road and Boulder Mountain Road — around five to 12 kilometres north of Barriere — is closed in both directions with no detour available.

There is no estimated time of reopening but DriveBC says another update will be provided at 7 a.m. Thursday.

Meanwhile, power has also been knocked out in the same area. BC Hydro reports power has been out for 360 customers since around 3:30 a.m. Thursday. A crew has been assigned.
