COLLINS: These days, a security job adds up to job security

Oct 27, 2022 | 4:30 AM

THINK OF YOURSELF as a dashing hero rescuing someone in distress. You jump into the fray and, protecting him or her, whisk them away to safety and become a hero.

These days, that’s no longer a fantasy but a reality. More and more people are asking for bodyguards or security details. And rightly so.

Violence is more a way of life than ever and it can affect us all. And finding enough people to do the job is a daunting task. Candidates for the RCMP and other police forces are dropping and, among those who are applying, many are not suited.

It takes special training to be on a protective detail. And politicians who never thought about it before are asking for security. Demonstrations against politicians are on the rise and have certainly become more violent.

A CBC report this week indicated there were 315 vacancies in the group looking after protective details. It’s a dangerous job, as evidenced by those caught up in the infamous riot at the U.S. Capitol January 6, 2021.

It’s not only politicians who need security, though. Public figures of all sorts are under increasing attack. Musicians, public speakers, movie stars, are all facing attacks of one sort or another.

And even the media, apparently hated by all and trusted by none, are in need of help. I would venture to say that, if they haven’t started already, media companies who can afford it, will start sending out security people with journalists tasked with covering events that could put them in danger.

And I haven’t even started to cover the myriad of businesses that need protection from attacks in malls, on their businesses because of their ethnic background , and the list goes on.

And so it seems that if you’re interested, security work could set up your own security for some time to come.

I’m Doug Collins and that’s One Man’s Opinion.
