Windstorm, drought conditions increasing chances for tree breakage Thursday
KAMLOOPS — Kamloops residents are encouraged to take care of loose objects in their yards and keep flashlights and batteries handy Thursday (Oct. 27).
Environment Canada is forecasting a storm that will cross B.C.’s Interior tomorrow. Winds gusting from the south at 60 km/h are expected to begin late overnight Wednesday through the morning then potentially pick up to up to 80 km/h in the late morning and afternoon hours.
Alyssa Charbonneau, meteorologist with Environment Canada, told CFJC Today winds of up to 80km/h are stronger than what Kamloops and area typically receives, increasing the chances of trees in the city breaking.
“We’ve also had this very dry stretch, so trees are a little bit more weakened from the drought,” Charbonneau says. “There’s the potential for a little bit more tree breakage than you’d normally see for these types of winds. Most of the precipitation is going to be left on the coast. For the Interior, the impacts are mostly going to be felt as wind.”
