Fire breaks out in Westsyde duplex

KAMLOOPS — A Westsyde home has been heavily damaged by fire Wednesday morning (Oct. 26).

Kamloops Fire Rescue (KFR) sent several crews to 649 Reemon Drive after receiving calls at about 10:25 a.m. Wednesday.

Photos and videos posted to social media show flames coming from a second floor window of the duplex.

KFR incident commander on the scene Ryan Wright confirmed that when crews arrived everybody had safely evacuated the home.

The second story of the duplex was fully engulfed in flames when trucks arrived on scene. Five units responded to the scene with crews able to quickly knock-down the blaze.

“We got a report of a structure fire, we responded from doing some hose testing just down the road here. When we arrived on scene the second floor was fully engulfed, we did a quick knockdown on it. Then other units came in, we did a quick search. Made sure there was no extension and we are at this point right now,” said Wright.

While Kamloops RCMP also responded to the scene, wright said there doesn’t appear to be any criminality involved in the fire.

“How many units responded, probably five of our units, possibly six. Everybody was out safe when we got on scene but we did do a search just in case to make sure every one was out,” said Wright.

The renter of the property who did not want to speak on camera noted that he believes the fire started in the attic space and spread from there. He noted that the home has had electrical problems in the past.
