COLLINS: A rocky road lies ahead

Oct 25, 2022 | 5:00 AM

“WINTER IS COMING”. A phrase often used in the early seasons of Game of Thrones.

Officially the motto of one of the “Houses” in the show, most watchers took it as a precursor of turmoil and war, and on the website slang.net, it is interpreted as “something bad is about to happen.”

Tomorrow, I expect we will be able to say “winter is here.” The Bank of Canada is widely expected to raise the interest rate by 50-75 basis points. It’s an attempt to fight the huge jump in inflation that has hit the global economy hard.

On top of this, a moderate recession is predicted for early next year. Six in ten Canadians are worried about how they are going to make ends meet.

Grocery stores have raised prices substantially. People on fixed incomes are eating less, trying to get by with less heat and hydro, gas prices are still ridiculously high and the list goes on.

Christmas shopping will be more restricted in many households. Vacations, ski trips and the like will be reduced or at least curtailed. That, of course, will hurt business. So the vicious economic cycle will continue.

With the Brits trying to get hold of their leadership, let alone their economy, the U.S. so divided they’re finding it difficult to make any decisions for the good of the country, and Russian threats to end the world, it’s not a rosy picture.

But we have weathered worse, and I don’t doubt we will survive this as well, albeit with more bruises than before. But if winter is here, it’s time to bundle up.

I’m Doug Collins and that’s One Man’s Opinion.
