SICAMOUS, B.C. — Sicamous RCMP are investigating after a youth was sexually assaulted near Parkview Elementary School and Parkland Mall.

In a news release issued Sunday (Oct. 23), RCMP say a 14-year-old youth was walking with her 13-year-old friend Friday (Oct. 21) at around 4:30 p.m. where they were approached by an unknown man.

According to police, the man asked them “Hey, do you know…” then grabbed the 14-year-old without finishing his sentence. Both youths began screaming and the man released his grip, allowing them to run away.

The man is described as white and approximately 40 years old with no facial hair. Police say he was wearing a black toque, black zip-up jacket, and sunglasses.

“These youth did everything correctly by screaming and running free,” Sgt. Murray McNeil says. “They were able to provide a description of the man. We commend their bravery.”

Anyone with information on the reported sexual assault, or who may have been in the area, is asked to call Sicamous RCMP at 250-836-2878.

In a post to Parkview Elementary School’s website, School District 83 Superintendent Donna Kriger says a letter is being sent home to parents, guardians, and caregivers, and supports are being put in place in Sicamous schools. She encourages parents, guardians, and caregivers to have a conversation with their children about what to do if they’re approached by a stranger.
