KAMLOOPS — Kamloops Fire Rescue crews were called out to a structure fire at 561 Desmond Street shortly before 2:30 p.m Sunday (October 23).

Fourteen officers responded to the call and Jamie Chase with KFR says crews battled the blaze for three hours.

“The crew from the Brocklehurst fire hall was there within three minutes and they arrived to find very heavy smoke and fire coming from the back of the house.”

Quick action on the fire prevented the flames from spreading any further in the house and to other houses in the neighbourhood.

The roof of the structure was damaged severely with other parts of the house left unscathed.

“It’s always a concern of it spreading to other houses in the neighbourhood and, of course, in the structure where it started. The crew that got there did a very good job considering how much fire and smoke there was when they arrived and they were able to contain it to the relatively small area of the house that was on fire,” Chase adds.

Chase says thanks to a working smoke alarm, the only person in the house was able to safely evacuate without injury.

A damage estimate has not been released and an investigation into the cause of the fire is underway. Locals are facing the aftermath as the three people who live in the house have been temporarily displaced.
