Police watchdog to investigate after elderly man injured in collision near Chase

CHASE, B.C. — B.C.’s police watchdog is investigating after an elderly man was injured in a crash near Chase last weekend.

In a news release, the Independent Investigations Office of B.C. (IIO) says Kamloops RCMP were called last Sunday (Oct. 16) at about 8:30 a.m. The caller expressed concern that an elderly man was planning to “commence a lengthy drive.”

About three hours later, the man’s vehicle was involved in a two-vehicle collision on the Trans Canada Highway near Chase. He was airlifted to hospital for treatment.

Police say the occupants of the other vehicle were not seriously injured.

Because the elderly man’s injuries were severe enough to meet the IIO’s definition of serious harm, IIO will determine what role, if any, police action or inaction played after the initial call was received.
