City of Merritt advises election results may not be available until Sunday
MERRITT, B.C. — With general voting day for the municipal election on Saturday (Oct. 15), there is a possibility the residents of Merritt will have to wait until the next day to know the results.
“The last ballots will be cast at 8:00 (p.m.) and once the period for voting closes, they will move into the counting process,” Sean Smith, Merritt’s chief administrative officer says. “We anticipate that if things go well, all of the ballots will be counted and there will be an official declaration of election results on Saturday night. That being said, if there is a need for recounts or anything like that, there is a possibility that things could move into Sunday. So it will depend on the circumstances as to when exactly that final declaration will be made.”
The Ministry of Municipal Affairs could not be reached for a comment on the legality of the results potentially coming the next day.
