KAMLOOPS — New treatment and recovery supports are coming to Kamloops to help individuals dealing with alcohol and substance-use challenges.

Twenty new beds will be coming to the Kamloops community and the ‘A New Tomorrow Treatment Solutions’ building in Brocklehurst. The beds will provide safe places where people can connect to life-saving services and supports.

After announcing the new treatment centre in July, A New Tomorrow is almost ready to open its doors, starting this evening with an open house for the community.

Medical director for A New Tomorrow, Dr. Mandy Manak, addressed the importance of receiving provincial funding to help break down barriers to proper care.

“I’m glad to see the Ministry of Mental Health and Addictions focusing on recovery and that is our focus, too. I think there has been a little bit of a gap. There are a lot of private pay facilities but nothing that is funded for patients that need a funded bed,” said Manak.

The program has been in the works for Dr. Manak for multiple years, and the addictions specialist physician is happy to finally see that dream become a reality.

The 20 rooms are expected to be quickly filled as they start accepting applicants in the coming weeks.

“I expect that there is going to be a waitlist. We have already had people asking and seven of those are transitional beds, so they will be people awaiting treatment after a period of detox, both before and after treatment,” said Manak. “Then we have 13 beds, mixed men and women for intensive daytime treatment.”
