KAMLOOPS — A search for a missing 22-year-old woman in the Nicola Valley has ended tragically.

In a post on Facebook, a friend of the family is reporting the discovery of Jacqueline McDermott’s body following search efforts Saturday (Oct. 8).

The woman was the subject of a large search conducted by Search and Rescue teams, RCMP and members of the public.

RCMP Sgt. Chris Manseau says while a police investigation is underway, investigators do not suspect any criminal intent.

McDermott was last seen September 30. She had attended a meditation retreat near Merritt. Her parents say she did make it to the retreat, but left after a short while. The next day, her vehicle was spotted along Highway 97C between Merritt and Logan Lake.

McDermott was travelling across the country in her van, setting out this past summer from the Kitchener-Waterloo area of Ontario.

The family has asked for privacy as it deals with the discovery.
