Kamloops Fire Rescue opts for Halloween fireworks ban amid dry conditions

KAMLOOPS — Thanks to ongoing dry conditions in the local area, Kamloops Fire Rescue says fireworks are a no-go this Halloween.

As a result of the lack of precipitation and higher temperatures, this year the wildfire risk has persisted beyond the typical summer fire season timeline. And in a new release Friday (Oct. 7), Kamloops Fire Rescue says it has decided not to allow any fireworks in city limits this year.

“We know that fireworks displays are often a part of Halloween celebrations in Kamloops, and we understand this decision may not be a popular one, however, our decisions are made in the best interest of public safety,” states Deputy Fire Chief Ryan Cail.

“This year, the risk of fireworks contributing to an interface fire within City limits is too great, and we hope the community is understanding and cooperative.”

People may be subject for a $250 fine if they are found using, possessing, storing or selling illegal fireworks without a valid authorization notice from Kamloops Fire Rescue.

Anyone who sees a fire within city limits is urged to call 911 and report it. For fires spotted outside of city limits, call 911 or *5555 from a cell phone.

KFR notes that when reporting a fire, it’s important to try and take note of the following details for first responders:

• exact location and size (the size of a campfire, a car, a house, a football field, etc.)
• colour, density, and volume of smoke (white, gray, brown, black, etc.)
• wind speed and direction (which way the smoke blowing)
• type of vegetation and spacing (in trees, grass, etc.) – terrain (steep, flat, etc.)
• valuables at risk (near homes, structures, etc.)
• access (near a main road or on a trail, street names, etc.)
• resources currently in use (someone already fighting the fire and with what)
