KAMLOOPS – There is a new man in charge of RCMP in Kamloops. Inspector Jeff Pelley is moving into the role recently vacated by Superintendent Syd Lecky.

Pelley has 23 years of experience with the RCMP and has worked in Prince Rupert, Kelowna, 100 Mile House, New Hazelton, North District, and Williams Lake. He grew up near Kamloops and worked as a frontline Constable in Kamloops in 2003.

“My family and I are ecstatic that we were able to return to Kamloops last year,” said Pelley. “I am alive to the community issues and commend our employees on their dedication and tenacity over the past year where I worked closely with the Detachment as Operations Officer. I look forward to being the team’s Officer in Charge and making Kamloops a safer community.”

Pelley’s 23-year career has seen him work in a wide variety of RCMP positions including frontline operations, Serious Crime, as a Watch Commander and Advisory NCO. He has worked with Indigenous communities and has been a Detachment Commander twice before in New Hazelton and Williams Lake.

Pelley was selected for the position following a selection and interview process that involved Mayor Ken Christian, Kamloops CAO David Trawin, and the Southeast District RCMP. The group put forward a recommendation that was endorsed by the RCMP.

“Jeff has extensive general duty experience, strong leadership skills, and a capacity to triage serious incidents,” said Mayor Christian. “From gangs and drugs to domestic and mental health concerns, Jeff will lead from the front and is committed to calming the streets and making Kamloops a safer city.”

Pelley is expected to build upon the legacy of former Superintendent Syd Lecky with a strong focus on evidence and community-based policing. It’s expected Kamloops residents will benefit from Pelley’s policing experience and established relationships with community partners.

Pelley’s rank will be upgraded to Superintendent once he has completed the transition from his current position. That is expected to be complete within a few weeks.
