Kamloops MLA excited by proposed B.C. United name

KAMLOOPS — The B.C. Liberal Party could soon become B.C. United.

Following a vote from membership at their last convention in Penticton to approve a possible name change, over 2,000 names were proposed by party membership. Of those names B.C. United was the top choice.

All current B.C. Liberal members will have an opportunity to vote on the new name before the end of this year.

Kamloops South-Thompson MLA Todd Stone was excited to see the party move toward renewal, a promise of new leader Kevin Falcon.

“The B.C. United name is really the piece at the end of the day which is intended to stitch it all together. The strong visionary leadership, the big bold ideas, the great candidates, all of that comes together under this new name of B.C. United, which really spans that whole coalition of people that have supported this party is the past and we have to do hard work to invite back in so that more people support this party into the future,” said Stone.

While the name change helps party renewal, Stone admitted there is much work to be done to continue growing the party.

“Renewal is about way more than just a name. The name is important, but renewal is about having a leader who is exposing a vision of inclusion, who is saying to British Columbians, looking right in their eyes, ‘I don’t care who you pray to, or if pray at all, I don’t care who you love, I don’t care where you live, I don’t care how old you are,'” said Stone. “Everyone is welcome in this party if you agree with a common baseline set of values that are all about building a better British Columbia.”

The name-changing process, if approved, won’t be quick, and should a snap election be called before 2024, it’s believed the party would still be listed as the B.C. Liberal Party on the ballot.
