KAMLOOPS — The first ever Tapestry Festival took over McDonald Park on Saturday (Sept. 24) showcasing different countries and cultures from all over the world.

“We call it Tapestry because it’s woven from so many different cultures. I don’t know if there’s any culture that isn’t here. We’re so excited and honestly, I’m almost teary-eyed when I look around and see all these people together,” says Event Coordinator Patti Phillips.

The cultural collaboration event had dancing and singing, people were able to try different foods from across the globe, and aimed to highlight the diversity of Kamloops.

“It makes me oh so happy because one of the things I love most about Canada is the diversity. I get to know people from all countries, from all religions, from all circumstances and we are all here living in this fantastic country,” says Adriana Arzeta, Columbian vendor.

“It’s always amazing to see the multiculturalism in Canada — the diversity also. We get to see each other’s culture and learn from each other and newcomers have so much to offer our society,” says Taiwan vendor Min-Hsien Chang.

Multiple businesses and vendors showed off their countries’ cultures at the festival and in the event’s first year, Phillips hopes the fest is the first of many.

“This is our first annual. We’re planning on having more [festivals] and it’s only going to get bigger and better,” Phillips adds.
